Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipGUEST: I brought in a pamphlet from a 1933 banquet at Notre Dame.
My father was maybe a water boy for the football team from '32, '33 until he graduated in '36.
APPRAISER: If you're going to be a water boy, Notre Dame is a pretty good team to be a water boy for, right?
(laughs) GUEST: True.
APPRAISER: So, what, he goes to this banquet in 1933.
And who's there?
GUEST: The Four Horsemen.
APPRAISER: The Four Horsemen of Notre Dame, called that because famous writer Grantland Rice deemed them to be the Four Horsemen when they won... GUEST: Okay.
APPRAISER: ...the College Championship and the Rose Bowl in 1924.
GUEST: Mm.
APPRAISER: Okay, so the four of them are Don Miller, Elmer Layden, Jim Crowley, and Harry Stuhldreher.
The four autographs together featuring the Four Horsemen is quite a find.
Uh, we think at auction this would sell for $3,000, $3,500.
GUEST: No way!
(gasps) Holy cow!
APPRAISER: Yeah.
GUEST: That's awesome.
APPRAISER: Now, I-I do have to make a comment about the fact that the autographs aren't authenticated-- we have the provenance.
We believe them to be authentic-- when they're graded, values go up.
We've seen examples as high as $5,000.
$7,500 for the Four Horseman autographs.
GUEST: I'm speechless.
Oh, my gosh.
Thank you!
APPRAISER: (chuckling) You're welcome.
GUEST: That is so awesome.
Thank you.
