I knew he was sick.

He'd been sick for a while.

And I never reached out.

It had been so long since we'd seen each other.

I think -- I mean... Today, this year would be 24 years, maybe, since the last time I saw him.

So I didn't feel comfortable reaching out, and I obviously regret it very deeply now.

He was an extraordinary basketball player, phenom, star.

And he had ALS, which is such a cruel irony for someone who was so free in their body to then become a prisoner in that way.

So I found out he passed.

And because of how much time had gone by, I was actually really surprised at how emotional I was and how deeply it affected me.

I think that high school is like this very magical brief moment in time.

It's like this intersection of innocence and independence.

And it happens so fast.

I feel like the memories are so visceral and so sacred.

So this is for you, Tyrone.
